FAQ:
Do I have to provide an interpreter?
The ADA’s requirements for communication access are outlined in three key titles:
Title I (Employment): Employers with 15 or more employees must provide reasonable accommodations, like ASL interpreters, for job interviews, training, or meetings. This ensures Deaf employees can perform essential job functions.
Title II (State and Local Government): Public entities, such as municipal offices or public schools, must ensure effective communication for their services and programs. They must give primary consideration to the individual’s preferred aid, like an ASL interpreter.
Title III (Public Accommodations): Private businesses, such as restaurants or hospitals, must provide communication access to serve the public equally, with no size exemption.
Failing to comply can lead to lawsuits, Department of Justice (DOJ) complaints, or fines ranging from $15,000 to over $350,000, as seen in recent enforcement actions.
How much time before my event/appointment should I request the interpreter?
There is no minimum amount of time that is required in advance. We will accept a same day request. However, requesting an interpreter ASAP is crucial as interpreters are not employees, they are independent contractors and they are not always available at a last minute notice. More than 5 day notice is recommended.
How do I request an interpreter?
1. Fill out the request form or email rnr@akrnr.com
2. If you have a contract, great! If not, we will be in touch. A contract must be completed prior to an interpreter assignment.
3. If you have access to any preparation materials necessary to ensure effective interpretation services, please provide them via email.
4. Wait for confirmation. Depending on how soon the appointment will occur as well as how quickly an interpreter is acquired this may take up to one week. You will receive a call letting you know the interpreter(s) who will fufill your request.
How many interpreters are needed?
For services longer than 2 hours, theatre work, heavy content jobs, and complex assignments a minimum of 2 interpreters is required. At times this may be a hearing interpreter and a Deaf interpreter. Because interpreting involves complex linguistic and cross-cultural communication, appropriate steps will be taken to minimize interpreter fatigue and ensure clear, effective communication and meaningful access for all participants.
